I’ve been using this cool little hack, and it’s something that’s helped me stay motivated to keep fighting for my goals.
It’s simple, it takes less than 60 seconds a day, and it’s very powerful.
What is it?
It’s simply a countdown, in days, to the end of my life.
Why does this work so well?
- It reminds me of my mortality.
- It reminds me that I don’t have forever to achieve what I want to achieve.
- It reminds me not to get caught up in the small stuff and take life too seriously.
- It reminds me that I don’t have time to worry about unimportant stuff.
We often get so caught up in the mundane, the day-to-day, that we forget that we don’t have much time on this planet. We start to get complacent and take less risks. We start to lead uninspired lives, where we give up on our dreams and settle for less.
I’m sure you’ve had an experience that caused you to question your existence. A death, an accident, or even some kind of epiphany. It may have caused you to examine your life and even live better. The problem is that you’ll soon fall back into the hustle and bustle of life and get complacent again.
This is why you must have a daily reminder. You need to make it a regular, active thing to keep benefiting from it.
Look, 70, 80, 90, even 100 years seems like a long time when you’re in the middle of it. But it’s a blink, man. You just can’t approach life like you have forever, waiting for this, waiting for that. Before you know it, you’re 30, 40, 50 years old and still don’t have the body, the relationships, the career, the LIFE you want.
Ticking off the days you have left can remind you to keep pushing, keep striving, keep hammering for the things you want. It’ll remind you that your life is finite, and that you need to get in gear and go for it.
How to Implement This in Your Daily Life
Simply use the note feature on your phone. Every morning take a look at the number and say let’s get it to yourself, then (and this is the important part) absolutely seize the day. Every night before bed reflect how you’ve made the day count, and lessen the number by one day.
Example: Johnny is 26 years old. He guesstimates he’ll live to about 90. 90-26=64. 64*365=23,360 days left. Johnny then goes out and handles his business.
It’s that simple.
The clock is ticking, and you don’t have much time. What are you waiting for?
